The worth of a brother

I think today’s episode really proves that one doesn’t truly understand the worth of another until they’ve lost them. Death does that. It makes us stop and think about how life would be like without someone we are so used to seeing everyday… It makes us wonder what would become of us if a person we love just suddenly vanishes.

I think Jeremy’s death made both Damon and Stefan pause for a second and look at everything around them. The person they love has just lost the most important person to her. Elena did everything in her power to protect her brother and yet lost him. In the end of it all, even after all the love these brothers have Elena, I’m so so sure they would never want to have taken her place.

They could and would never have said - I’d take your place if it means I can relieve your pain. I think today, Damon and Stefan realized they were so fortunate to still have the other standing in front of them. When everyone around them are losing the people they love - Elena lost Jeremy, Klaus and Rebekah lost Kol, and Caroline lost Tyler - they still have each other.

I always believed Damon knows how much Stefan loves him, and how much Stefan would do for him. I feel Damon has always known the extent to which Stefan is ready to give up for him. When he said “I know, Stefan” - it was like saying you don’t need to tell me. Of course I know. I love you too, and I’m glad you’re still here with me.

It was almost an epiphany for him. Only because I feel Damon has always felt Stefan was going to be there. Come what may, he will always have his back no matter what. But today, Damon finally realized that death is uncertain, there’s no real timing, no warnings. It takes less than a moment for one to lose the person that means the world to them. What if he had lost Stefan? What if he lost his brother?

Stefan, on the other hand, was the most likeliest to say “I love you” out of the two of them. Only because I believe he has always accepted the fact. He has always loved Damon, and even if he denies it, he actually knows its a lie.

But I think he has always questioned himself on if Damon loved him. He is unsure, unlike Damon who is very sure. Damon isn’t the kind of person to show emotions, and honestly, I feel he himself struggles to accept his love for Stefan. Its those many years of hatred, where he convinced himself he hates his brother for what he has done to him. And those many other decades where he acted tough, like he doesn’t need anyone - especially not Stefan.

So now, after all these years, to be able to fully admit that he loves his brother through it all is tough, even to himself, that he sometimes struggles to do so.

I loved the porch scene between these two because it really highlighted their characters and where they’ve always stood in their relationship. Stefan can express his emotions and tell his brother that he loves him, and he’s just so glad he still has him. With everything they’ve been through, they’ve made it this far, and they will make it further, as long as they still had each other.

Damon knows that. He’s glad Stefan was standing there, silently telling him he loves him, but he doesn’t really need to hear it. Because he knew it all along, he always has. What he didn’t know was the worth of that presence and love, and that’s something he realized when he saw Elena lose her brother.

In all the mess of the love triangles these two have been involved in, I truly never felt their relationship took a beating. Yes, the dynamics have changed - they are no longer the best friends they used to be - but their love for each other never changed. They’d still do anything to keep the other safe, they’d sacrifice for each other and be selfless when needed.

But most importantly, they never truly let any of the Petrova women come between them. They’re still brothers. And I’d be damned if any of these guys would choose Katherine or Elena over each other when it comes to a life and death situation. If I’ve learned something about Damon and Stefan in these four seasons, it is that they can probably live in a world without a Katherine or an Elena, but without a brother to stake, fight, love and protect, living for eternity would not be worth the effort.

Love is a very powerful thing, but the love of a family is the most powerful one of them all.
